Background: link!
Personality:
On the surface, one might think of Caitlyn as just another obnoxious, high society lady. But she's nothing of the sort. Even as a child, Cailyn would be out in the field, practicing her shooting skills, rather that joining the fancy parities her parents would be involved in. As she grew older, she came to the realization that being a Kirraman meant helping and protecting Piltover, just like her family before her, only...she had a different idea to go about it.
Instead of fancy parties and counsels to get things done, she wanted to get things done herself. She joined the city's police force, becoming an Enforcer with the idea of making the city a better place. She wanted to make a name for herself, but for her own actions, not for being a part of one of the most powerful families in Piltover.
Caitlyn is very smart when it comes to investigation. She sees into details most might miss or glance over, and spent much of her time as an Enforcer connecting dots for what she called the Great Conspiracy for the crimes in the Undercity. She found and connected the clues all by herself, actually breaking orders from the Sheriff repeatedly to dig more into what she had found. When it comes to doing the right thing, she isn't afraid to disobey orders. Unknown to her, the reason Marcus was so against her investigation, was because he was also working for Silco. Because he repeatedly shut her down and tried to stop her, she once again goes around him to meet one of Silco's men in jail, which leads her to meeting Vi.
When Caitlyn first meets Vi, she thinks she's just another bruiser from the Lanes. Just another criminal that deserves to be locked up for her crimes. It's Caitlyn's obsession with the Silco case that leads her to have Vi released by forging Jayce's signature and using Vi as an inside source to get into the Lanes and start searching for answers.
At first, she's really only using Vi for the information she could gain on Silco from her, but the longer she spent with her, she quickly became attached to the other woman. She goes out of her way to save her when she becomes injured, and repeatedly risks her life for Vi. It's Vi that changes her views on the Lanes. When she first sets out with her, she still sees the Undercity as nothing more than a criminal wasteland, where people there choose to be and act the way they do. But as she sees it for herself, and learns what Vi experienced there, she quickly realizes the truth. The Undercity is the way that it is because of Piltover's neglect. She even argues this point in front of Piltover's counsel, including her own mother, but it falls on mostly deaf ears, which only encourages her to try to do more. Vi isn't even the only one that opens her eyes to this, but also Huck. She sees his suffering, how he got hooked on Shimmer. It breaks her heart to see his suffering, and is so grateful for his help in saving Vi that she even gives him a big hug.
Along with her own self-righteous mindset, comes a disdain for those who choose to do wrong. The smuggling, attacks on the docks, and especially the attack on Progress Day pushes Caitlyn to find the criminals behind everything. While she's sympathetic to those that have been dealt a bad hand at life, it's those that continue to willing do bad and hurt others that lose her sympathy. When it comes to Jinx, she initially gives Vi the benefit of the doubt. She realizes quickly that Jinx was working with Silco, puts all the pieces together, and comes to the conclusion that she's a lost cause. While she didn't exactly stop Vi from trying, she tried her best to make Vi see that nothing she could do would change or stop Jinx. She even puts her life on the line, and was ready to take out Jinx to protect Vi and Piltover from her, but Jinx is able to overpower her, and because she failed to act quickly enough, half of Piltover's Counsel, her mother included, died from Jinx's bomb. It's Caitlyn's obsession with bringing Jinx down that fuels her behavior in the coming months.
Caitlyn fell into despair after her mother's death. Without her mother, she felt lost, and wasn't sure what to do anymore. Vi was her grounding pad, but when the Undercity attacked the memorial, it was a changing point for her. She was already angry, but the attack only fed the fire. She fell even further into her grief and started to lose a bit of what made her different from the other Enforcers. While she was still careful and confident of her own skills, she took things to an extreme. She used the gases in Zaun against itself to flush out Silco's men, and taking risks she likely wouldn't have before. She almost hit Isha with her shooting, and actually hit Vi in the gauntlet (partially because Vi got in the way). When Vi argued that she's becoming just like Jinx, this hits too close to home, and combined with the fact that Vi stopped her from finishing the job, she took this as a personal attack and believed Vi had turned against her. At that point, Vi was one of the few people left she could trust, but now she was siding with her sister. She was furious, so much so that she actually hit Vi with the butt of her gun in an attempt to get away from her. With Vi left behind and not there to ground her, she got swept up in the Piltover politics, and got thrown into a position of power she didn't ask for.
Caitlyn never wanted the power that Ambessa put on her. It was why she never followed in her mother's footsteps, but when everything went haywire after Jinx's attack, she felt responsible. Not just for her mother's life, but for everything bad that happened afterwards. She kept saying that she had the shot, and if she had just taken it, none of this would have happened. This responsibility that hung over her is why she stepped up. She had failed to stop Jinx, and this was her way to make up for her mistakes. Or so she thought.
What she did was jump from one fire to another. While Jinx alluded her for months, Ambessa whispered in her ear, and kept Caitlyn in a constant state of conflict within herself. On one side, she wanted to find Jinx, but she also wanted to bring peace between Piltover and Zaun, and struggled with the mere idea of letting Jinx go just to repair what was broken between the two cities. All the while, she saw the way people were suffering and tried to do what she thought was best. Every time Ambessa and the Noxians arrested Zaunites without cause, she spoke against it, but Ambessa continued to act behind her back.
It wasn't until Caitlyn ran into Vi again that it really clicked that things could get better. Caitlyn didn't feel like she had much of a choice anymore. That she didn't deserve forgiveness, that this was the path that was set for her. But Vi trusted her again. which is why Caitlyn finally acted. She helped Vi trap Ambessa, and when Jinx was imprisoned again, she trusted Vi's judgement and gave her the chance to run away with Jinx. What she didn't expect was for Vi to stay and truly forgive her -- and yes, Vi was ready to leave with Jinx -- but when Vi forgave her, she finally started to forgive herself and let go of her hatred and anger towards Jinx.
After the Battle of Piltover, Caitlyn stepped back out of the spotlight that she never wanted in the first place. She let others lead the Counsel, giving Sevika the Kiramman seat in her stead to ensure Zaun had a seat at the table, and focused on helping Piltover and Zaun rebuild. She looked for Jinx again, but this time, for Vi's benefit, and not out of her own anger. She wasn't going to let hatred didn't rule her life anymore.
Abilities:
- marksman: Caitlyn is an excellent marksman. She's been a good shot since she was a child, but is particularly adept with rifles
- fighting: while not as skilled in hand to hand as she is with shooting, Caitlyn has been trained in fighting with knives and staff
- observation/investigation: she's very smart in connecting dots and picking up on small clues that most would overlook or not notice, making her excellent when it comes to investigative work
